Thymol C10H14O is a commercially important aroma chemical found in Nature in the essential oils of Thymus vulgarice, ajowan ocimum gratisimum and `O' viride and in many other oil. Thymol can be isolated from the natural sources by enrichment by fractional distillation or by direct isolation by conventional method of recovery of phenols from essential oil. Thymol is obtained from the volatile oils of Thymus vulgarice linn of Monarda punctuate lini and of trechyrpermum ammi (Linn). Sprague. Thymus vilgaris is a low peranial undershrub 20-30 cm. high, successfully introduced in the Nilgiris at higher elevations. It is extensively cultivated in Germany, France, England, Greece and various other countries, both for searoning and for its volatile oils and in India its cultivation on commercial scale may be tried in the western temperature Himalayas from Kashmire to Kumauna between altitudes of 1500 and 4000 m. The plant grows heat in the hills. The herb has a pungent taste. It is said to possess antiseptic anthelacintic, expectorant carminative direct emmenogogue and sedative properties due to the presence of a volatile oil. A liniment prepared from the shoots is applied in shenmatism and skin troubles.
