Phenol Formaldehyde Resin
Phenolic resin is the term that describe a wide variety of product, results from the reaction of  phenol and aldehydes. Although phenol itself, C6H5OH is the dominant phenol, resorcinol and  alkyl substituted phenols and p-phenyl phonel are used in substituted phenols and p-phenyl phenol are used in substantial volume. The aldehyde used is almost exclusively formaldehyde  but small amounts of furfuraldehyde and acetaldehyde are also used. Formaldehyde is sometimes used in the form of its dey powder polymer, paraform. The phenol formaldehyde, reaction product, may be liquid, a solid or a powder, and it may be pure resin or modified with filers or polymeric compounds. Most the resin may be delivered to the user ready to be cured or it may be in the temporary thermoplastic `Novolak' from to which a hardner hexmet hylenetetr - amine (hexa) will be added. Some phenolic resins, those based on substituted phenols, are permanently fusible and soluble in organic solvents. The major use category of phenolics are molding compounds, coatings and industrial bonding resins. The latter, includes resins for  grinding wheels, coated abresives, brake lining, clutch facing laminates, plywood, adhesives, glass wool thermal insulation, bonded organic fibre padding, foundry, sand bending wood waste, bonding, and other miscella
