India figures among the top five countries in the world in the field of book publishing. According to the latest figures, India is the fifth largest country in book production in English language. The first four countries are West Germany, Britain, The United States and Japan. There are more than 72,000 publication and printing establishments in India representing a growth of 66% over the last decade. Some, 7,29,000 people were employed in the printing industry in 1986, an increase of 36.8% since 1977.
China has the global lead in the number of books printed annually. In 1985 for example, 6.6 billion copies were printed in that country. It ranks seventh in the world for book publishing with 45,705 titles published in 1985. Book publishing started coming into its own only during the last four decades in the newly emerging countries of Asia, Africa, and Latin America. Before that they were primarily dependent on the colonial powers to fulfill the book read of their peoples, for both education and entertainment, in the developing world these are countries which do not have much publishing of their own, as well as those which have a developed and active publishing industries.
