Project Report on Iron Ore Mining And Manufacture Of Sponge Iron
Iron ore is extracted from the mines. Containing Iron ore deposits. As a matter of fact, iron ore deposits are farmed by many different processes e.g. weathering, sedimentation, hydrothermal and chemical. Iron ores occur in igneous, metamorphic, and sedimentary deposits. To be classified as an ore, iron-bearing, mineral deposits must be capable of being mined and reduced to iron on commercial basis. Direct shipping ores are those that can be shipped as mined, without any beneficiation, and contain from 25-68% iron. Some lower grade ores are mined but these ore beneficiated before being sent to iron making furnaces.
Most of the mines produce a magnetic are and beneficiate and agglomerate it before shipment.
The state of a country's iron and steel industry provides an index of its industrial progress. A universally accepted yardstick for measuring a country's level of economic development is its per capita Consumption of steel. Judged by the Yardstick, the depressing fact remains that India is among the countries with the lowest per capita consumption of steel in the world, with only 14 kg Developed countries such as Sweden, West Germany, Japan and U.S.A. have high per capita consumption figures.
The basic raw material for Electric Arc Furnace (EAF) steel making is steel scrap. With the rapid growth in EAF steel making, demand for scrap has been on the increase. On the other hand, improvements in steel making practices and subsequent processing steps of casting and rolling have improved yields of semis and finished products which has led to reduction in the volume of return scrap generated in these operations. The problem of scrap shortage necessitated the search for a suitable alternative and today sponge iron is found to be technically and economically a viable substitute for scrap. Sponge Iron or Direct Reduced Iron (DRI) is used as a substitute for scrap in EAF to varying extent depending on quality, availability, requirements etc. Further, growing acceptance of sponge iron as a feed to EAFs and success of sponge iron processes in commercial operations have led to the concept of Direct Reduction -- Electric Arc Furnace (DR-EAF) route for bulk production of steel.
